Designed with COPPA Requirements

Child Safety & Privacy First

TapTap Buddy is designed from the ground up to protect your child's privacy while providing instant emergency access. Learn about how we implement COPPA requirements and safety measures.

COPPA Compliance Commitment

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) protects children under 13 from unauthorized data collection. Here's how TapTap Buddy exceeds these requirements.

No Data Collection from Children

TapTap Buddy works entirely offline on the NFC tag itself. We don't collect any personal information from children under 13.

Parent-Controlled Setup

Only parents can create accounts and configure emergency contact information. Children cannot access or modify their data.

Privacy by Design

Emergency contacts are stored locally on the NFC tag and only shared when someone taps it in an emergency situation.

Minimal Data Retention

We only store essential parent contact information and delete inactive accounts according to our data retention policy.

What is COPPA?

Understanding the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a U.S. federal law designed to protect the privacy of children under 13 years old online. Enacted in 1998 and recently updated in 2025, COPPA regulates how websites and online services can collect, use, and disclose personal information from children.

Key COPPA Requirements:

  • Parental Consent: Obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information from children
  • Clear Notice: Provide clear privacy policies about data collection practices
  • Data Minimization: Collect only necessary information for the service's function
  • Parental Rights: Allow parents to review, delete, and control their child's data
  • Data Security: Implement reasonable security measures to protect children's information

2025 Updates

Recent COPPA amendments strengthened data retention limits and require separate consent for third-party advertising. Compliance deadline is April 22, 2026.

Our Safety Principles

TapTap Buddy goes beyond compliance to create the safest possible experience for children and peace of mind for parents.

Parental Consent First

Parents must create accounts and approve all emergency contact information before any tag can be activated.

Emergency-Only Access

Personal information is only accessible when someone taps the NFC tag, and only emergency contacts are revealed.

Child-Friendly Design

Our products are designed specifically for children's safety without collecting unnecessary personal information.

About COPPA Safe Harbor Programs

COPPA Safe Harbor programs are FTC-approved self-regulatory programs that provide guidelines and oversight for companies handling children's data. Companies can seek certification through approved Safe Harbor programs like PRIVO to demonstrate compliance with COPPA requirements and gain legal safe harbor protection.

While we are not certified by a Safe Harbor program, we have designed TapTap Buddy to meet and exceed COPPA requirements through our privacy-first architecture and strict data minimization practices.

How TapTap Buddy Protects Your Child

1

Parent-Only Account Creation

Only parents (18+) can create accounts and set up emergency contacts. Children never interact with our online systems or provide any personal information.

2

Offline NFC Storage

Emergency contact information is stored directly on the NFC tag itself, not in the cloud. This means your child's data stays local and private.

3

Emergency-Only Access

Information is only revealed when someone taps the NFC tag in an emergency. No tracking, no monitoring, no unnecessary data sharing.
